The AC motor commonly used in electric vehicles was invented by Nikola Tesla in 1888. Now Xiaoyu will introduce the principle and structure of AC motor (stator and rotor).

AC motor has two main parts: stator and rotor. The stator is a cylinder on the outside, and there are many windings on the inside of the cylinder. These windings are connected with the external AC power supply, and the whole cylinder is connected with the frame, so it is called the stator.

Inside the stator, it is either a cylinder wound with many wires or a cylinder with cage structure. They are connected with the power output shaft of the motor and rotate at the same speed, so they are also called rotor.

There is no connection and contact between the stator and the rotor, but when the stator winding is connected with AC power, the rotor will immediately start to rotate and output power.

AC motor is an electro-mechanical converter, which can be used as motor or generator. As a motor, it can generate rotating electromagnetic field through three-phase current. When used as a generator, it can produce three-phase current. Three phase current is an AC current with three phases.

What is three-phase AC? The phases of the three AC voltages have corresponding time points on the time axis, and the sum of the three AC voltages at each position is zero.

Three phase alternating current

The working principle of AC motor is that the rotor winding rotates in the rotating magnetic field after being electrified. In order for the stator to generate a rotating magnetic field, three coils with 120 ° rotation are usually required. The three coils are mounted on the stator of the three-phase AC motor. Through the three coils, an AC voltage with phase difference of 120 ° is provided. Due to the characteristics of AC, a rotating electromagnetic field will be generated in the stator winding.
